Israeli occupation forces injure two fishermen, one of them seriously injured

Al Mezan condemns the escalation of Israeli violations and calls on the international community to intervene to protect the lives of civilians

The Israeli occupation forces continue to escalate their violations against Palestinian fishermen at sea off the coast of the Gaza Strip, and these violations vary between pursuing them, targeting them, sabotaging their equipment, and endangering their lives, by shooting at them, causing deaths and injuries in their ranks. The latest of these attacks was the injury of two fishermen, one of whom was seriously injured after the occupation forces pursued them at sea, opened fire at them and arrested them.

According to field information, at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Monday, 11/9/2023, Israeli gunboats opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats that were in the sea of Rafah governorate in the southern Gaza Strip, and surrounded a fishing boat with two fishermen on board, Munib Mahmoud Munib Ashkantna (25 years old) and Nafez Ramadan Ali Salah (22 years old), both residents of Gaza governorate, and seized their boat and took them to an unknown destination.

Later, through the follow-up of the center in his capacity as their legal agent, it was found that one of the fishermen, Nafez Salah, had been injured and was undergoing treatment at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba in Israel. On the other hand, the occupation authorities released Munib Ashkantna the same evening through the Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing in the northern Gaza Strip, and it was found that he had been wounded by a rubber-coated metal bullet in the back and left leg.

The outcome of the monitoring and documentation operations continued by Al Mezan Center indicates that since the beginning of 2023, until the issuance of this statement, the Israeli occupation forces have committed (232) violations against Palestinian fishermen at sea, during which they arrested (30) fishermen, injured (18) others, and seized (10) fishing boats. They also continue to ban the entry of equipment necessary for the continuation of the fishing profession in the Gaza Strip as part of their tight siege imposed on the Gaza Strip..

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the continuation and escalation of Israeli violations against Palestinian fishermen, and stresses that the organized Israeli practices, whether the repeated shooting and wounding of their ranks, the continuation of arbitrary arrests and the accompanying humiliation and humiliation, and the seizure and sabotage of their equipment and property, come in the context of the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip, and its deliberate harm to Palestinian civilians.

Accordingly, PCHR holds the Israeli occupation forces fully responsible for the life of the fisherman Salah and calls for an investigation into what He and his colleague were targeted and shot, and calls on the international community to carry out its duty to investigate this, work to lift the land and sea blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, oblige the occupation forces to stop their systematic violations, respect the rules of international humanitarian law in the context of their dealings with the civilian population in the occupied Palestinian territories, and work to prosecute those suspected of committing grave and systematic violations of the rules of international humanitarian law.
